Medical Summary for Sean Monet

SeanMonet presented to Austin Equine Associates on 6/1/09 for evaluation of an injury sustained to his left rear limb. He was found tangled up in smooth wire above his hock which resulted in wounds on the front and back of his leg. Radiographs of his legs did not reveal any damage to bones, however it was discovered that one of the lacerations communicated with the tarsal sheath which encircles the tendons in the back of his leg. Due to the extent and location of the injury, there is a potential for a career ending and possible life threatening infection to develop and thus treatment must be aggressive. In order to combat the infection, an intravenous catheter was placed and he is receiving antibiotics every 8 hours. A surgical procedure was performed on 6/1/09 where the tarsal sheath was debrided and opened for drainage. He is also getting his wounds lavaged daily as well as regional limb perfusions which delivers a high level of antibiotics directly to the injured site. The limb is being maintained under a pressure bandage and primary closure of the wound on the front of the hock was performed today. The other wound will heal by second intention. Sean Monet will be hospitalized and treated for approximately 5 days, following which time he will be sent home with oral antibiotics and bandages. Assuming no persistent infections develop, Sean Monet should make a complete recovery.

Sincerely,

JoLynn Joyce DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS
